Brooklyn Bespoke Shoemaker – Francis Waplinger

Francis Waplinger recently moved his workshop from deep-end Long Island to Brooklyn. A very smart powermove in my opinion and something that should ultimately be good for his brand and ability to grow it. Which I an pleased for as I really like Francis (we are both from Seattle) and I want to see him do well. The reason for this post, however, is this cool new adelaide that he made for himself and wanting […]

The Brogue Loafer of all Brogued Loafers – Andante Shoemaker

I have never quite seen a loafer like this one before. It pushes ideas and crosses boundaries I feel most shoemakers are afraid to cross. And Andante Shoemaker, of Japan, did so in a very well-executed manner. So much so, in fact, that I love them and am already picturing all of the amazing combinations that could be done with these. I think that in all-calf, this would be too much to swallow for most. […]

Winson Shoemaker – Next Level Craftsmanship from Indonesia

Indonesian shoemaker, Winson Shoemaker, has recently blown my mind with one of his latest pairs made for a prominent IG shoe aficionado @thatguysshoes . I was blown away when I saw this, not only for the beauty and craftsmanship of them but for the fact that it proves that with passion, persistence and belief in one’s self anyone on this wonderful planet can become what they wish to. In this case, the owner of Winson, […]

German Bespoke Shoemaker – Atelier Leonard Kahlcke

I love discovering new shoemakers. I love even more seeing new shoe designs though. Blend the two and it becomes a very exciting thing. German Bespoke shoemaker, Atelier Leonard Kahlcke is someone new to me and coming out with some very cool shoes. This penny loafer particularly caught my eye as something truly unique yet not overly crazy. A simple idea that is profoundly different and allows a lot of playfulness in the final product. […]

Acme Shoemaker – New Maker on the Block

There is a new Chinese shoemaker from Beijing that is coming out with some very elegant shoes. I just recently discovered them on Instagram and was blown away by the brown balmoral oxford highlighted above. They are very elegant and look very well made. Apparently, their shoes are completely handmade and they offer bespoke, made to order and are working on their RTW collection that is soon coming. I look forward to seeing how they […]

Full Brogue Double Monks

I have always loved a double monk that was fully brogued. It adds a unique look to the now so common cap toe version that you see almost as prevalent as oxfords. Even better would be a suede version. I think I would give a lot of use to that. It just seems so versatile This version, by Chinese shoemaker Gordon Jimjun (IG), is perfectly balanced. Edward Green has a similar model but I always […]

A Shoe’s Sole – A Form of Expression of Self

A sole is a shoemaker’s blank canvas. A part of the shoe that they can truly express themselves. While uppers are somewhat ‘standardized’, in the sense that there are expectations of what they need to be/look like, the sole is the part where creativity can run wild and a shoemaker can truly show their talents on their blank canvas of art. As a blogger and an advocate of shoes, it is often that we just […]

Altan Bespoke Sample Series – Archives Brought to Life

Altan Bottier, of Paris, France, just recently decided to use the current state of the world to introduce something new on their Instagram page. One positive thing about facing adversity is it often causes one to question their direction, and see if they can either improve or offer something new/different as a way to ‘think outside the box.’ And so, like most retailers are facing at the moment with the decline in orders, it would […]

Next Level Boot Design (and making) by Patrick Frei

Patrick Frei, for me, is creating some of the most exciting, mind-bending and inspirational footwear of today’s offering in the industry. I have been meaning to write about Patrick’s back story for about 3 years now and have been failing him for not doing so. It’s just that it is a history that could be written as a short novel and rarely do I have 4 spare hours to write blog posts these days. I […]

London Super Trunk Show 2020 – Brand Showcase #2: Norman Vilalta

Our 2nd showcase is none other than my good friend, Norman Vilalta, one of the shoemakers I most respect in this industry. Norman is one of the only brands that has been with us for each year of the event and is always a favorite at the show, which comes as no surprise being that Norman always has new things on offer, great ideas and shoes that no one else does! Norman will surely have […]
